Green Energy
Going, Going…Green!
There are lots of ways to conserve energy…and many won’t cost you one red cent. Quite the opposite: they’ll reduce your energy bill and help conserve energy.
Here are some common sense energy saving tips you can implement today:
- Use ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs). They use less than 25 percent of the electricity standard bulbs use and last 10 times longer. When they do burn out, recycle them!
- ENERGY STAR computers, copiers, printers, and other office equipment use less electricity, eliminate waste, and help the environment. Visit www.energystar.gov for a list of ENERGY STAR products.
- Shut off all the lights when you leave a room.
- Replace light switches with dimmers or motion sensors.
- Use night lights when a little light is enough.
- When you go away, use timers to turn your lights on and off.
- Use outdoor lights with photocells and motion sensors so they go on only at night and when someone is home.
- Choose Energy Star certified appliances, which use up to 50% less electricity than standard models.
- Unplug electronic equipment when not in use, unless you use them frequently during the day which can actually increase your electricity bill.
- Plug home entertainment and computer equipment into power strips. That way, it’s easy to turn them all off with a single switch.
- Vacuum or dust refrigerator coils regularly.
- Run your dishwasher only when it’s full.
